Home to spectacular sunsets over neighbouring Lake Shinji, Matsue is a pleasant, laid-back city with great food and some fine historical attractions. It straddles the Ōhashi-gawa, the river that connects Shinji-ko with Nakanoumi, a saline lake.

There’s a compact area in the north with almost all of Matsue’s interesting sites: an original castle, a fine samurai residence, the former home of writer Lafcadio Hearn and garden. It’s worth spending a night or two here to enjoy the leisurely pace.
