Once known as Blizzard All-Stars, the upcoming MOBA title from Blizzard Entertainment has been renamed as <b>Heroes of the Storm</b> ahead of its public reveal at BlizzCon 2013 this November. <b><a href="http://play.any.tv/SHK1q" target="_blank">Arena of Heroes</a></b> is the thinking man’s MOBA. A wild claim? Perhaps, but Arena of Heroes is focused far more on strategy, planning, and combinations than on surprising an opponent with a quick button press. It’s more akin to a game of chess than to popular multiplayer online battle arenas. Well, presuming you use chess pieces that include a chain-gun wielding rabbit from space. I’m taking a wild guess here that you probably don’t. Sometimes it’s nice to play something completely and utterly out there, so far from the norm that it becomes fun by default. <a href="http://www.smashmuck.com/" target="_blank"><b>Smashmuck Champions</b></a> is one of those games: totally unique and a blast to play. Each character has its own moves and voice over. In this sense, the game is very MOBA and all the better for it. Although only the most dedicated will use more than a few favourite characters, the fact that the choice is there should be celebrated.<br /><br />Looking Good – The graphics for Smashmuck are more than passable – the sort of visual style that isn’t necessarily fantastic looking, but that suits the game and does its job – and look great with everything on full. If you’re looking for some influenced-by-Cryengine game, look elsewhere, other than that, enjoy the quirky art.<br /><br />Given that Smashmuck seems at least loosely based upon the MOBA genre, I expected the worst from the community. It seems without the passion of a second-by-second fight for survival keeping emotions flared, people are much… well, quieter. There are people out there that will talk your ear off, but most people just want to play and be left alone. Whether you want 5v5 battles where you destroy enemy turrets or try to capture certain areas, or if you want to play the more easy-going Pluderball (a variation on Capture the Flag), the folks at Smashmuck have you covered.<br /><br />Running Ads – The first time I played Smashmuck, I fell in love with the voice over. Many of the game modes have a commentator who, in classic fighting game style, narrates the match without specifically saying anything. There are some hilarious line sin there, but once you’ve played two or three matches you realize you’re going to hear the same pieces of commentary time and time and time again. Non-MOBA fans will be put off by the lack of variety in the game modes and in the overwhelming amount of characters. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">With all the new MOBA games that are being released these days, this seems to be a really flourish period for this genre; often they are just clones of the most successful titles, but sometime a title come out trying to innovate it with a breath of fresh air. The last one in this category is called <a href="http://play.any.tv/SHH4m" target="_blank"><b>Panzar</b></a>, is a free-to-play fantasy title with action combat system, and is coming from Russia. We used the word "choose", because just like in a regular MOBA, there are different characters to choose from, without any chance of customization. Right now, the available champions are: Tank, Paladin, Sapper, Sister of Fire, Inquisitor, Berserker, Ice Witch and Gunner. Even just from the character selection screen you can get the game's general style, which differs a lot from the cartoonish style of LoL and from the Anime style that characterizes a lot of modern MMO games. Panzar features a brutal and dark artistic style much closer to the Warhammer's one. Orcs are ugly and scary, dwarves aren't sexy at all, and blood is common as water. If you are looking for big cute eyes and shining items, this is the definitively the wrong place to look for.<br /><div><br /></div><div><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="365" src="http://www.f2p.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Panzar-screenshot-7-638x364.jpg" width="640" /></div><br />To start our adventure we've chosen the Inquisitor, a dual-wielder assassin style human character with high DPS and a stealth skill as starting ability. As you can see, in Panzar you have to select your character (you can have different ones) before actually entering the game, and there won't be a selection screen before each game. This is because one of the Panzar's features which distinguish it from the other MOBA is the permanent RPG-style character progression. Instead of leveling up and equipping itself during a game, your character will gain experience points, money and resources after each match, and you can use them to buy/create new items or obtain new skills, just like a regular MMORPG. After the character creation you will be brought to the game's main screen, which is pretty standard and intuitive. Besides the usual buttons for the shop and the premium features, you will have different other tabs: Character, Forge, Shop, Altar, Fitting Room and Social. In the Character screen you can see your see your character and go to the character selection screen. In the forge you can upgrade the already owned items and - assumed you have the correct recipe - create new ones, such as potions and gear. The Shop is where you can buy new items, and the Altar is where you unlock new skills and build your character. In the fitting room you can customize the aesthetic of your character with new dyes, haircuts and more, and in the social tab you can manage your friend list, your clan and tournaments. <br /><br />The strange thing is that in order to enter a game, you just have a big red shiny "play" button which will instantly queue you for a random match, and that's all. Right now you can't choose the map or game mode, etc. And this is quite annoying for a game with tournaments and which probably aims to become an e-sport in the future. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="365" src="http://www.f2p.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Panzar-screenshot-6-638x364.jpg" width="640" /></div><br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">GRAPHICS AND SOUNDS </h3>We have absolutely no complains about the game's visuals. As soon as you enter a game you will realize how gorgeous the graphics are, aided by the CryEngine 3, which offers amazing and detailed 3D models and special effects, impressive animations and shadows. It's definitively a pleasure to look at the water, the spell effects and the excellent use of the physics. We are without doubt above the standard of the usual free-to-play game, here. <br /><br />The maps graphic style is something worth mentioning too. With the exception of the coliseum-style arena which is honestly boring an uninspired, all the bunch of maps offered by the game are well realized and unique when speaking about graphics. Too bad most of them are really small, we would have really appreciated some more variety in level design. <br /><br />The sound effects are enjoyable too, and while they are nothing really impressive, they do their works very well, capturing the feeling of what you would expect to hear in the heat of the battle, like the clash of steel and scream of rage and pain. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.f2p.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Panzar-screenshot-3.jpg"><img height="512" src="http://www.f2p.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Panzar-screenshot-3-500x400.jpg" width="640" /></a></div></div><div>GAMEPLAY <br />This is the part that makes the game truly unique and totally different from your usual MOBA. Panzar is played in a "above the shoulder" third person view which is extremely similar to the one seen in TPSs and some action MMORPGs like RaiderZ or Tera. The combat system is completely action and extremely simple and intuitive. It uses the typical TPS WASD + mouse combo to give you maximum control, the left click is bounded to the standard attack, the right click to the power attack, you can use Ctrl to block and reduce the damage, shift to sprint and space to jump. Moreover, you have the unlocked skills on numeric hot-keys just like in a regular MMORPG. It's really easy to get used to this system and if you've ever played a TPS or an action MMORPG you will feel at home. We have to say that this system it's extremely fun and addicting, and you will have to react faster while keeping an eye on the action to help and support your team while slaughtering the enemies. <br /><br />The classic match in Panzar consists in capturing one control point at the center of the map. The maps aren't that big and often the match will just became a big brawl in the middle. However, usually you have different heights, passages and points to use for cover that will allow the use of different tactics and playstyles. Moreover, the bigger maps have tools, devices and traps that you can use to gain an edge, such as exploding barrels, rolling wooden logs and more. <br /><br />By playing with our Inquisitor we realized that we had to play it in a particular way to be successful. Just charging in the middle of the fight facing berserkers and tanks usually resulted in an almost certain death. We had to learn our role in the battle and how to take the best advantage of our character's strong points, using the stealth skill to arrive behind the enemy casters, gunners and squishy characters and take them down quickly. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img height="399" src="http://www.f2p.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Panzar-screenshot-1-638x398.jpg" width="640" /></div><br />This made us understand that actually every character has to be played in a different way and has a precise role in the team. Just like in every other MOBA, collaborating with other players is extremely important in order to win a match. <br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">CONCLUSIONS </h3><b><a href="http://play.any.tv/SHH4m" target="_blank">Panzar</a> </b>is something between a classic MOBA and a TPS, and features a classic MMORPG progression. The game's graphics are gorgeous and absolutely amazing, but the game feels a bit incomplete and lackuster in some aspects. There aren't so many character for a MOBA game, and each character has to be leveled individually, so if you get bored and want to try another class, you have to start from the beginning. Moreover, there is no way to create a customized game, choosing maps, limit of players or anything. The best part of the game is that matches are quick and entertaining, and the combat system can be extremely addicting. Attacks and other skills like buffs, snares and heals are mapped to the QWER keys, though each Hero can only have five active at any given time. There are also skill-CDs to manage too, which might be a bit tricky when the action gets frantic. One thing’s for sure: teamwork is crucial, and going it alone will almost always lead to your death. Thankfully, the next respawn is only 10 seconds away, and players can pick a different hero from the ones available to them and come back in with a new character of completely new style. This is a nice feature for sure, because the heroes are pretty clearly responsible for different roles – melee DPS, tank, ranged DPS, healer, and so on – and the team mix can easily be adjusted on their will. Some even have skills specifically depending on the makeup of the team. Players can join pre-formed teams or simply queue for the next random game with other like-minded folks by pressing the“Play” button. Here lies the rub, because owning other heroes is expensive. It’s a definite must-try if the Online Battle Arena or Action Real Time Strategy is your cup of coffee. In MOBAs, players control one “hero” unit and duke it out on a game map which features three “lanes,” where each team is tasked with pushing to the opposite side of the map and destroying an opponent’s base.<br /><br />As DotA grew in popularity over the years, many MOBA games began sprouting up, including the hugely popular free-to-play League of Legends from Riot Games and DotA 2 from Valve. A typical game in most MOBA titles lasts for about an hour. That’s a fairly long gameplay session for a mobile game, which is why Sneaky Games decided to make Arena of Heroes turn-based, allowing users to pick up and play whenever they want.<br /><div><br /><div><img src="http://www.insidemobileapps.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/AoH-Gameplay.png" /><br /><br />“What we were trying to address with going turn-based and asynchronous is still give players that MOBA fix but without having the pressure of committing to an hour-long ,” Sneaky Games CEO David Godwin told us in an interview.<br /><br />What’s interesting about Arena of Heroes is that the game can also be played in real-time, where gameplay is still turn-based, but a user can play against another user live, with a three-minute timer for each user’s turn. Godwin adds that a game in Arena of Heroes averages about 25 to 45 minutes, but the developer’s goal is to get that number down to around 30 minutes.<br /><br />Although Arena of Heroes only allows for one-on-one multiplayer, the developer plans to add two-on-two and four-on-four post-launch. Each player in a one-on-one match controls four different heroes, where each hero can make three different actions — movements, attacks, or a combination of both. Minions, AI-controlled units that each team deploys to fight alongside their heroes, move on their own towards an opponent’s base.<br /><br />A traditional MOBA allows the user to move their hero around freely and emphasizes twitch-based gameplay, meaning a user must have a fast reaction time. This, in part, is what males MOBA games notoriously difficult to learn, and if a user doesn’t know how to play or doesn’t have another user to mentor them, more experienced players will pick on them. Arena of Heroes works around this issue by making the game turn-based, where games play out at a slower pace compared to a traditional real-time, twitch-based MOBA. The game also introduces users to the game by showing them a visual, slide-based tutorial. An interactive tutorial is coming at a later date, Godwin says.</div><div><br /></div><div><img src="http://www.insidemobileapps.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/ScreenShot1.jpg" /><br /><br />“We weren’t real convinced that twitched-based MOBAs are going to work on iPad or iPhone,” Godwin says. “It’s a hard thing to do.”<br /><br />Similarly to League of Legends, Arena of Heroes monetizes through selling additional heroes (two heroes come with Arena of Heroes for free) and alternative skins for the heroes. There are also two currencies — gems and coins. Gems are the premium currency and coins are the in-game currency earned through playing the game. Gems or coins can be used to purchase heroes, but only gems can be used to purchase hero skins.<br /><br />Sneaky Games plans to launch the game in the next couple of weeks for PC, Mac and iPad.
