If history and architecture are your passion there’s an evocative mix, from formidable Mughal monuments to faded legacies of the British Raj. Indeed, even a ramble around the Old City can unfold into a mini-adventure. For those in search of spiritual sustenance, Lahore has qawwali (Islamic devotional singing) and Sufism (Islamic mysticism) that will blow your mind.<br /><div class="mpuWrapper " id="mpuInContent"><div class="mpuInner"><div class="adContainer" id="adContainer_mpuInContent"></div></div></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYcQfNMcONg96kBA3H-79dI30R3VFwDPqJ7J28jbT8jAB267_Devx5uYvxcwx_GNKRJRwnvX-9r_7vGRvBxZsrMUaaPlVqXMLViFr4TGEdlnpfZckAZ1pGex3gds4gUKYdKPG8QDcHgp7h/s1600/Lahore+Pakistan+17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYcQfNMcONg96kBA3H-79dI30R3VFwDPqJ7J28jbT8jAB267_Devx5uYvxcwx_GNKRJRwnvX-9r_7vGRvBxZsrMUaaPlVqXMLViFr4TGEdlnpfZckAZ1pGex3gds4gUKYdKPG8QDcHgp7h/s320/Lahore+Pakistan+17.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=357183">Pakistan</a> is crazy about cricket and one way of breaking the ice with Lahorites is to strike up a conversation about the game. Lahore – which, incidentally, is home to former cricket great turned politician Imran Khan – sometimes serves as the venue for high-profile international matches. It takes more than just a couple of days to get to know this splendid city, so don’t regard it merely as a jumping-off point to nearby <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=356195">India</a>. And whatever you do, make absolutely sure your stay in Lahore includes an afternoon on the outskirts in <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=357298">Wagah</a> and at least one Thursday.<a class="pin toggleMap closed" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore#" id="pinToggleMap" style="display: block;"><span class="showMapText">Show in Lonely Planet</span></a><br /><div class="relatedLinks clearfix"><h3 class="themeHeading">More about Lahore </h3><ul><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLXp3TEdnEV2oHoX8sf0gqEHuyVAOYtxdMy44hAPfEIOqTqUbjF7IEp1jCHKqyBZcP9DeSeSq0a_rPtHwf4nfUjAlbr4qvw0892FR-dZU1TxmgvWq1Z8aA1RvIOLOkZmPssAgB4ohVtpz/s1600/Lahore+Pakistan+19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioLXp3TEdnEV2oHoX8sf0gqEHuyVAOYtxdMy44hAPfEIOqTqUbjF7IEp1jCHKqyBZcP9DeSeSq0a_rPtHwf4nfUjAlbr4qvw0892FR-dZU1TxmgvWq1Z8aA1RvIOLOkZmPssAgB4ohVtpz/s400/Lahore+Pakistan+19.jpg" width="400" /></a><li> <a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore/transport/getting-there-away">Getting there & around <span class="bottom"></span> </a> </li><li> <a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore/practical-information/money-costs">Practical information <span class="bottom"></span> </a> </li><li> <a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore/history">History <span class="bottom"></span> </a> </li><li><a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore/hotels?lpaffil=hotels-beta">Hotels</a></li></ul></div><div class="relatedLinks clearfix"><h3 class="themeHeading">Make it happen</h3><ul><li><a class="linkChevron" href="http://shop.lonelyplanet.com/shopSearch?q=lahore%5E2+or+Pakistan">Shop for travel guides</a></li><li><a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/pakistan/punjab/lahore/hotels?lpaffil=hotels-beta">Search hotels</a></li><li><a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/bookings/flights.do">Cheap flights</a></li><li><a class="linkChevron" href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/bookings/insurance.do">Travel insurance</a></li></ul></div><div class="sponsoredLinks ecomComponent style1"><div><div class="title"><a href="http://www.googleadservices.com/pagead/aclk?sa=L&ai=CpoU9HRwZUfejIM2-yAOirYGAA66aqL4DptTHyjvAjbcBEAEg4ePTCygEUNChsPH4_____wFghJXshdwdoAGWmef5A8gBAakC3VzUXGJ0tj6oAwGqBHZP0DS5SOVY8kwiPj0I6KEivpYWNLoy3mT_hqCRL2uX3HD0B3s65J_AC2ky4OO3vwRrzR1OwoJPtE1CgkjT0EBlKh5yTv_tCzwyDEwI8bKR0HB6Gm8HxKj3btLp7519-7-tZv6eeiELWeZeSi7UCRUZ-6DSrzJTiAYBgAfS5pgG&num=1&cid=5GhEviXE_V5dLznLprXTSvws&sig=AOD64_1CQTSNQD0KjTCZN3-FsF3g5IYQ0g&client=ca-bbc-lonelyplanet&adurl=http://www.booking.com/index.html%3Faid%3D312627%3Blabel%3Dbookings-naam-29J2QH7AoorPzVrSdCPP1gC15909274246%3Bws%3Dwww.lonelyplanet.com" rel="external"> Booking.com - Hotels</a></div><div class="title"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJF8BE6UDnzyL-wT5dhq_3nrEt04j5pcQn5ZKP9PBZEr2IXPscgAQhdGurW2ivo7_AgroPMRoCHJak7th527mk3mJmh1oaxvwZDAs0yojzsoTBK2wJtPdhfj6a5_GmkXyDf1u8drWwNfm/s1600/Lahore+Pakistan+21.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="398" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYJF8BE6UDnzyL-wT5dhq_3nrEt04j5pcQn5ZKP9PBZEr2IXPscgAQhdGurW2ivo7_AgroPMRoCHJak7th527mk3mJmh1oaxvwZDAs0yojzsoTBK2wJtPdhfj6a5_GmkXyDf1u8drWwNfm/s640/Lahore+Pakistan+21.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="title"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVkwhZS8rC8gRbNg-FrBBBiby4nAtjRObmU2vPBPZzsMULnqIJ8CULYK0OdnB11h_wDIut610uc0KN-u2A3vKstW3NNbb72b_FYuCqTsynHt86L5gsaEXeKWb9IM3b9F2G3Yx5Ntkn4E_z/s1600/Lahore+Pakistan+22.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVkwhZS8rC8gRbNg-FrBBBiby4nAtjRObmU2vPBPZzsMULnqIJ8CULYK0OdnB11h_wDIut610uc0KN-u2A3vKstW3NNbb72b_FYuCqTsynHt86L5gsaEXeKWb9IM3b9F2G3Yx5Ntkn4E_z/s640/Lahore+Pakistan+22.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="title"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrqGW75ia43zMv830YTAiolFVhXxQVPZDVbIsepKwXFWMrkvZesF0kkdaGQnoIOOMfI9KbYUO3wT3w6yij8cbI2nyFwNuSVdrjTYMrIbKWPK6TZzSd4wHdfnSFTlnZw74tigH0kpF_Yjk/s1600/Lahore+Pakistan+4.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrqGW75ia43zMv830YTAiolFVhXxQVPZDVbIsepKwXFWMrkvZesF0kkdaGQnoIOOMfI9KbYUO3wT3w6yij8cbI2nyFwNuSVdrjTYMrIbKWPK6TZzSd4wHdfnSFTlnZw74tigH0kpF_Yjk/s640/Lahore+Pakistan+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div></div></div></div>

But <br />every time the country seems to be gearing up to refresh the palates of travellers jaded with last year’s hip destination, world media headlines send things off the rails – again. No matter the attractions, tourism in Pakistan has always been something of a hard sell. A glance at the map shows the country living in a pretty difficult region: always-unruly <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=355739">Afghanistan</a> to one side, <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=361011">Iran</a> to another, and a border with <a href="http://www.lonelyplanet.com/destinationRedirector?atlasId=356195">India</a> running through the 60-year-old fault line of Kashmir. But since the events of 9/11, Western pundits have increasingly been wondering if Pakistan isn’t just living in a tough neighbourhood, it is the tough neighbourhood. Pakistan and political stability have never been particularly happy bedfellows. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn83lOkEhSSsVpB1_d5gNunIPjWnG33CJinCOed4nwy4VwF3o07Abp2x5Lf-AusOEyCJYLf6E4rOTqT9hNxvV9u3r7Y66AE35_1-GjLKNtyycsVdf1VdyQbpovywbvFBwtIQwRERpGq10_/s1600/Pakistan+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn83lOkEhSSsVpB1_d5gNunIPjWnG33CJinCOed4nwy4VwF3o07Abp2x5Lf-AusOEyCJYLf6E4rOTqT9hNxvV9u3r7Y66AE35_1-GjLKNtyycsVdf1VdyQbpovywbvFBwtIQwRERpGq10_/s200/Pakistan+8.jpg" width="200" /></a>President <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Q0IZi25jTVURkuThXAggWWkRNEyCYJWedrlRPALmq8TlevcAgOqH__HHvoC31wN_4KD4FpSh-ZZEgN0Y6nmgAqYo2GtWwc7uHpPme2rYqaQodX-9ZwQPUIPr70QMuwG1cnPEqgL2pZtY/s1600/Pakistan+25.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1Q0IZi25jTVURkuThXAggWWkRNEyCYJWedrlRPALmq8TlevcAgOqH__HHvoC31wN_4KD4FpSh-ZZEgN0Y6nmgAqYo2GtWwc7uHpPme2rYqaQodX-9ZwQPUIPr70QMuwG1cnPEqgL2pZtY/s320/Pakistan+25.JPG" width="320" /></a><br />Pervez Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 coup, looked to have an unassailable <br />position until relatively recently.
